3 ligs torn ankle. 1 is a complete tear and 3 break more than half. What is the normal course of action?
I have 3 torn ligaments left ankle after coming down on the ankle while standing on a sofa cushion. I went to a ORTHO yesterday and told me it was an ankle sprain typical physical therapy for 1 month, 2 times per week. One of the ligaments is a complete break and other 3 are partial tears. I do not see how this can be a typical strain when there is a complete tear. I am going to get a 2nd opinion, I just wanted to post here and see if I'm on the right track with Physical therapy did not seem enough. I have done research online to see what course of action should be, and the severity of mine says that surgery is recommended or a cast boot. Has anyone had this? If so what was the course for you?
What you describe is a degree sprain 3 and is not a typical sprain. In general, the course of treatment is a walking boot for 4-6 weeks to allow healing of the ligaments down (part of the process healing) and physical therapy for 6-8 weeks after that. PT often works, but must continue with the exercises for an indefinite period after the end of the PT if work. If PT does not work, then surgery may be necessary.
