Is it possible to suddenly develop a food allergy?
I’m a college student–which means that popcorn is basically a food group in my diet lol. So it’s safe to say I eat a lot of it. Usually it’s the microwave kind, but I’m at home now and we’ve got an air popper here.
So we bought popcorn kernels, butter, and salt, and made some air-popped popcorn. The past two times I’ve eaten it I had a mild allergic reaction.
Throat swelled up/burned, chest tightened, I was wheezing, OTC allergy meds cleared it right up. The first time I didn’t realize it was the popcorn, but last night I was sure.
This is just silly, though…unless the air-popped corn is somehow chemically different than the microwavable variety? Is that possible?
Any thoughts as to why/how this happened?

At first, I thought so too. But that same butter is used in most things my mom cooks at home. I haven’t had a reaction to any of those.
It’s not unknown to become sensitive (allergic or intolerant) to something you eat a lot of. You probably had that tendency and would never have realized it if you hadn’t eaten so much of it. ∠°)
