I am trying to start a professional marching band. How would i be able to start this?
this would not e a drum corps but a full marching band full or brass, woodwinds, guard, and percussion
For openers, you would need professional players. I have done this for YEARS – and we are not going to invest practice time, rehearsal time, and write in calendar dates unless we are GUARANTEED professional-level payment. This is NEVER *play for gate* – we play, and divide up whatever comes in – NEVER. Most civic parades are filled with HS, police, scouts, or amateur groups – at best, they receive an honorarium ( a couple of hundred $$ TOTAL per group) that goes into a scholarship fund, charity, etc. I was a member of an incredible circus-cover band – all top players, many West Point and other Army players, and the rest, multi-degreed pros, many of whom were also fine music teachers and band directors themselves. We did some gigs thru AFM Trust Fund – which is hardly pro pay – we did it to get going – but then, things fell apart. There is NO shortage out there of great players – but since we do this for a living, we need to be paid. Solve THAT part, and the rest is easy.
Want some math? Most of us will not leave the house for under $200. Even a small band – 30 players – that’s over six grand. Forty players at $150? Six grand. I could fill a SIXTY piece band TODAY if a needed to – I book classical musicians for a living, since 1984 – but would not unless I already had a contract and a hefty deposit. I have done business this way since I incorporated – not about to change. I am NOT unique – nobody is going to do this for LOVE, unless it is a part-time academic endeavor; those exist, but you get who you get – ALL levels of ability – some that you would not hire is you had to.
So – hit the Lottery, or get a Sugar Daddy to fund this – forget grants, there are none left for this – and THEN put out calls for players. And – who is paying for the MUSIC, the sound system, the furniture, lighting, mileage, INSURANCE, etc.?
