What is the concept of political partisan/realignment?

It is when there is a major shift in the way a majority in a particular country or region vote. Think about 1992 (in the USA): that was a major realignment in the United States. 1996 may turn out to be another one but we will have to wait for another couple of election cycles to determine if that was a fluke or a true realignment. It is a major shift, not just a one-time change in the way people vote but a significant lasting change.
